Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a low socio-economic community where my kids do not have the money to purchase their own chapter book that they can say, "Hey, this is my book". The majority of my students are on public assistance or live in shelters.

When my students own books, they become engaged through actively annotating.

I love the optimism and enjoyment my students show while reading an engaging chapter book that is assigned to the whole class. By annotating and being interactive with their own text, students explore the world of symbolism, imagery and plot development that authors create in order to have successful, meaningful dialogue and accountable respectful debates.

When I hear, “Oh! That’s what the author is trying to say” makes me excited that they are engaged and thinking critically about literature!

My Project

Students will be required to write a narrative essay in book form based on literacy techniques applied by the author of "Home of the Brave". "Home of the Brave" is considered a mentor text where the protagonist Kek, experiences family loss and is relocated to a vastly different country America. He must try to make it become his new home. Many of my students will be able to relate to this book because many are immigrants themselves or have experienced family loss and are constantly relocating to one home (foster) or shelter to the next. Like Kek, my students will be able to connect with the protagonists search for warm, loving friendships and stability. My goal is that my students can reflect by writing a narrative piece based on certain themes "Home Of The Brave" explores.
