My Students

There are currently a total of 50 students that make up my 5th grade cohort. My student body consists of students with disabilities, as well as, general education students.

Most of my students receive free lunch and many come from families that struggle financially.

Our school is located in an urban setting where many of the children have witnessed violence, drug use and in some cases, even murder.

Despite all that they go through and experience on a daily basis, my students remain hopeful. They come to school every day with the intent of succeeding in life and they operate with purpose and determination. My students never give up!

My Project

The books that I am requesting will inspire my students to become civic leaders in their local communities and beyond. During a time when there are so many social injustices throughout our country, these books will serve as examples of how my students can serve as agents of change.

I teach in a school where the majority of the students are students of color.

Many of my students have had to deal with some level of racial injustice either directly or indirectly. They have seen reports in the news regarding racial injustice and have often expressed their concern about their own safety because of the color of their skin.

I want to provide these books for my students as we begin to embark on identifying social injustices that occur in their communities and how they can participate civic engagement activities to foster change.
