Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a Title I school in the South Bronx. The students are very diverse; we are a mix of African-American, Latino and some new arrivals from the Middle East and Africa. The school goes from Pre-K to fifth grade and over 95% percent receive free lunch.
The students in my classroom are all special needs students.
They all have individual educational plans (IEPs). They vary in their needs from learning disabilities to social-emotional needs.
When planning classroom activities and conducting assessments, I keep IEP goals and outcomes in mind. I also keep the IEP in mind to determine how to collect and evaluate student progress toward educational goals.
My Project
Classroom environment is one of the most important factors affecting student learning. The physical structure of a classroom is a critical variable in affecting student morale and learning. I want to create a learning environment that is inspiring and exciting. The Super Hero theme fits perfectly with special needs students in elementary school. Students' involvement in the process of creating their environment can empower them, develop community and increase motivation. The Super Hero classroom bulletin board sets will be used to display their classwork, projects, and accomplishments. The Super Hero materials will also be used to label the classroom environment so students can take ownership of their learning environment.
