Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students will walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. We are a real melting pot as my students come from all walks of life and different cultures.

We are a Dual Language class, and this adds an extra challenge to First grade.

My students are accessing general education content in two languages (English/ Spanish). They are an energetic group of First graders. We celebrate little wins together each day in both words. I seek to prepare our bilingual students to tackle the ever-changing world that demands a multitude of languages.

My Project

The donations for this project will benefit all my students. I am asking for a variety of Spanish books to support reading and language development. Besides, the books will help to develop language acquisition for my Dual language learners. Often the Spanish book bins are empty, and my students cannot practice their Spanish reading skills. Providing my first graders with additional Spanish books will help my children develop the essential skills in the areas of alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, and print knowledge that provide a foundation for learning to read.

Once children learn the basic sound-symbol correspondences in Spanish, they can easily decode most Spanish words.

The Spanish language has a very predictable orthography. My goal is to prepare my kindergarteners with a variety of Spanish text with a high level of accuracy, regardless of the familiarity of the word patterns.
