Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Kindergarten and First Grade English Language Learners in a Title I school. My students are inquisitive, compassionate, and eager to learn. They are hardworking, resilient, and deserve access to the best educational resources available.

One common refrain I've heard from many students is that they don't have books at home.

All students, English Language Learners in particular, require access to quality reading materials to enhance their literacy and English language skills. Due to school closures because of the Coronavirus, many of my students are falling behind without adequate reading materials at home. Though I have attempted to provide books for some students, extra funding is required to provide them with what they truly need. Providing students with reading material at home will help them progress in their language learning, and foster a love of reading that will stay with them forever. In addition, I would like my students to have books to read over summer break to prevent the 'summer slide.'

My Project

My students can continue their learning at home with access to quality reading materials on their reading level. They can continue practicing decoding, fluency, and comprehension to grow their literacy skills. My students can read these books for fun, and I plan to use them for fiction and nonfiction literacy lessons. Students can discuss and write about what they read in these books. Reading will also boost their language acquisition and exposure to English throughout the summer.

I plan to mail these books to students' homes in packets so students have access to reading material throughout the summer.

Please help fund this project so my students can continue to learn over the summer!
