Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Curious kids in need of science materials! I teach 5th grade math and science in a high-need community. Our kids are ready to learn and are looking for fun science experiences.

Our school uses an enrichment model to teach kids, which means the topic is chosen based on students' interests and all activities are student centered. We use this model to study a topic with a small group of students once a week. Sometimes the topic may be out of the curriculum, which means we may not have any teaching resources or activities to use. We are only given a very small stipend to create activities that are interesting and educationally stimulating to the students. My students took an interest in studying the human body. I would like my students to walk away from this experience being able to understand that the human body is a complex system as well as be able to make healthy choices for their bodies.

In order to have students understand how complex the body is we will need a few things out of the scope of my stipend. My students can get a better understanding of where the organs are located in the body with a model of the body with removable organs. Not only will students see the actual shape of our organs but be able to manipulate them. We also need a set of activities that will reinforce vocabulary, provide visuals and models and hands-on activities. Students will be able to explore how the lungs work, calculate heart rates and check their reflexes. This set of activities will allow students to learn about the body through real life experiences instead of reading a textbook. We also need a kit of scientific experiments that will enhance our understanding of the human immune system. I would like my students to understand how the body defends itself so we can make healthy choices about our body. What better way to learn about this than through growing our own bacteria?

We need your help! Without your help, I will be limited to textbooks, a few library picture books and videos. Wouldn't you rather learn through hands-on activities, games, and experiments?
