Deep in the heartland of Silicon Valley rests a beautiful campus full of happy energetic students who come to school each day eager to learn in a meaningful learning environment. The students at my school inspire me to create lessons and be an innovative teacher that will spark their imaginations, add to their life schema, and help prepare them for the world of the 21st century. I am proud to help students do their best, whether it is learning the language, picking up comprehension skills that will enhance the reading experience, solving rigorous math problems, expressing themselves through the arts, experimenting to challenge an idea, or having fun throughout the experience.
My Project
My students are working on a service learning passion project where they "hand picked" the topics they were interested in learning about. They researched why trees are so important, how to help homeless people in our community, why littering is having a negative impact, how simple lifestyle changes could dramatically reduce the amount of plastics in our oceans, why turning trash into treasure can be a good practice, ways to increase the monarch butterfly population, and what local endangered animals need our help. "Guest Experts" from across the country visited our class for each topic to talk to us about what they do and to give the students ideas about what they could do to create a change in their own ways. With inspiration, the kids then created Google Slide presentations to teach their community about what they learned and will plaster "awareness posters" across the school campus. To take it on step further, each group came up with an "action plan" that involves ways the community can actually get out there and help. They will create a rainbow of trash, create a monthly neighborhood cleanup day, have a fundraising night at a community business, hold a beach clean up day, create a trash picking up station on our playground during recesses, make seed dispersal balls to spread milkweed plants around the neighborhood, make 75 Homeless Care Packages, and adopt a local endangered species to care for. The students created this DonorsChoose list of materials to use over the summer to work within their community to make a difference. Thank you for helping them on their way!
