My Students

Creative, earnest, curious, smart...these are all words I would use to describe our class. My students this year are learners who want to find out how things work and why, who have strong opinions about the world and how to make things better, and who are brave and bold in their convictions. These students are readers, writers, engineers, historians, scientists, and mathematicians.

These are the children who are going to change the world.

I find myself inspired by the inquisitive, tenacious students who I am lucky enough to call "mine" this year. Whenever I present them with an experimental art project, a new math concept, or a chance to design something to solve a problem, I know I can count on this group of kiddos for the most creative, outside-the-box approach that one could imagine. This class is ready to learn, try new things, and change the world!

My Project

This project will fund a class set of textbooks to help my third graders learn about the geography and history of our state, as well as developing a better understanding of our Native neighbors who have cared for and protected our shared lands and waterways since time immemorial. This project also includes two activity books to help me plan for engaging, hands-on projects to that will inspire my students and deepen their learning.

Third graders are curious about who they are and the history of where they live, and these books will help them develop the knowledge and critical thinking skills needed to understand the geography and history that has shaped our local culture.

These materials will make a huge difference in my students' learning. Our Social Studies standards ask students to do things like "understand how the geographic context affects social and economic issues" and "recognize how the key ideals of unity and diversity are enacted within the context of community." These are big ideas, and our current curriculum (which was published in 1998!) does not support the high level of learning that students are being asked to do. Having access to texts that are current is essential in developing these important skills.
