Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am requesting a CD player, 6 headphones, and writing table in order to incorporate a listening\writing center in my dual language literacy program. Our goal is for students to hear correct inflection, fluency, and intonation of reading. I want my students to enjoy books read by others.

My students are labeled as students at risk.

Most of them live in poverty and receive two meals at school (breakfast and lunch) for free, and probably they are the only meals they have for the day. My school is a Title 1 School with a lot of problems budgeting. We only have the most essential tools to teach but with a lot of spirit to help our community. Many of my kids do not have story time at home, and their only opportunity to be exposed to the world of reading is at school. I want to give my students more experiences than their everyday life. Reading gives them an escape.

My Project

With the resources we are asking for the students to be able to develop the hearing and the writing skills that are necessary to develop a second language and reinforce their native language. They will learn how a language sounds and how can it be written properly. In my school, we are using the Daily 5 program. My students will have the opportunity to visit the listening/writing center daily to hear and practice focus books each day. I plan to involve my parents by recording them reading books for the listening center. What better way to promote literacy at home than to have the parent's voices at school!

Data reflects that a student in a dual language program performs better than a student in a regular class.

Our goal in this program is to keep these students in the classroom and prepare them for college. A listening center will increase every student's vocabulary and strength of reading. I want to help my students realize they can achieve the impossible.
