Read! Read! Read! Having good books available to students is crucial to instill the love of reading. What better way than have kids reading books that have already been determined as not just good... but GREAT! We want our kids to read the Virginia Readers' Choice book selections at GES!!
My students are great!!
Just like the books we want them to read! We have an awesome K - 5 school in rural Virginia. We have a diverse population spanning all economic areas and representative of many ethnicities. We have many avid readers, but as the school librarian, I'd like to make sure we have more!
My Project
By obtaining copies of the Virginia Readers' Choice books, I will be able to ensure that all our students have great books to read and for a great reason. With this program sponsored by the state reading association - kids get to vote on their favorite book. There are two categories: primary (for K - 3) and elementary (for 3 - 5). While having one copy of each of the primary books is sufficient (being able to read them in one session), I will need multiple copies of the elementary level books, which are chapter books. If we have many copies available, many students will be able to read the book at the same time. Students have to have read at least four of the books from the list to be able to vote on their favorite. Not only will this provide great reading materials, but will also provide the 'spark' that some students may need to pick up a book to read for fun. Books will be used in coming years for library programs and novel studies.
These donations to our school will make a great impact on our students.
Kids will learn that reading can be and IS fun! There are so many great books published each year, and with dwindling budgets, it is hard to be able to provide students with these types of reading programs. I know that if we had these books available and were able to promote the Virginia Readers' Choice program, we could turn many students into lifelong readers!
