This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

The students I work with are all au-some in their own way!

Each has been diagnosed with severe autism, and qualify for my specialized program specifically designed to meet their needs. Given their difficulties with communication, understanding and navigation of their world, functional skills, and academics, it is a challenge every day for them to reach their full potential! It is my belief that they each have something wonderful to offer this world, and my life's work seeks to bridge the gap that keeps them from showing us what it is. They are all geniuses, I just have to find a way to let them show us!

My Project

All of my students are diagnosed with profound autism and are in my self-contained program specifically designed for them. Due to the severity of the disability and the number of students that I am serving, the need for these materials has never been greater. I am struggling to meet their needs due to a shortage of supplies that our district will not provide. The students all have extremely high needs academically, socially, and behaviorally. At this time, I supply almost 100% of the materials I use with the students. Our district has very little in its budget and therefore I cannot get all of the supplies I need to help our students in all facets of their education. The supplies requested will support the needs of our students and I am hoping to be able to give them everything I can to facilitate their learning!

In working closely with the other professionals that services our students, we know that the consistent practice requiring fine motor skills improves not only the specific skills on which they are working, but also the skills that allow them to enhance their levels of independence in the areas of self-help skills, writing skills, cutting skills, etc., all of which are serious struggles for my kiddos. The Busy Boards, Learning to Dress Boards, and Latches Boards all assist in these areas. Additionally, the books requested will enhance our social skills and reading groups/lessons. Finally, the office supplies will allow me to maintain an environment in which the students are supported and cared for.
