I teach K-8 music in a public, inner city charter school now celebrating 10 successful years.

You may ask, "They still have music in schools?" Well, they don't unless I write grants, beg, borrow, or run fundraisers for every single instrument. I literally have zero budget for any supplies, be it pencils or xylophones. It is a miracle to imagine you reading this proposal and making it happen!

As a charter school, our students come from every neighborhood of the city, every ethnic background, and every economic standing. Music is a place to practice being both a band member and a soloist, a group member and an individual. Little by little we are building an Orff orchestra of xylophones to be able to make something beautiful together. These accessible instruments draw in all students with their modular scales, challenging two-handed technique, labeled notes for music theory application, and large,inspiring sound. We are also asking for real mallets to replace homemade ones for our orchestra.

Your generous help will make it possible for students to have a high-quality instrument that can be played with interest by all the K-8 students. This is not a plastic toy stand-in that turns off the students! Help send the message that music is important for individuals to engage their creativity, perseverance, and concentration both alone and within the social setting of an ensemble. Music is the heart of a school.
