My Students

My students come from all neighborhoods of our city, and their backgrounds range a great deal with regard to race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and life experience.

Our school encourages students to become advocates in their own learning, and they are given a great deal of choice in the direction of their studies.

They are taught to imagine, innovate, inquire, and investigate. When our students graduate, they are prepared to attend college and the world beyond, equipped with 21st-century critical thinking skills and technological savvy.

My Project

Having 60 copies of Angels in America will allow my colleague and I to expose the entire freshman class of our school to a profoundly beautiful, Pulitzer-prize winning drama that seeks to capture the complicated tapestry of lives lived in America, particularly during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. We plan to connect the themes of this text to those of Arthur Miller's The Crucible, allowing our students to see the harm that can come to a community when those in power choose to emphasize difference over a shared humanity. In the world right now, we see this damage wrought on the lives of those in the margins on a daily basis.

Everything I assign for students to read in my classes is designed to complicate their thinking and show them a different point of view.

In this digitized age, it is far too easy to hermetically seal yourself off from the way other people walk through and experience this world, and, as a result, we as a society our losing our ability to empathize. My hope is that, with this text, students come to see the breathtaking way in which English can communicate joy and pain, love and loss, fear and acceptance in language that is alternately elevated and common, equal parts profane and profound.

When I was in high school, no other text meant as much to me as Angels in America; it changed my life. To change the lives of my students might be a tall order, but, at the very least, I think this text will open their eyes and their hearts to what they can't see clearly or objectively, limited as we all are to our own identities and truths.
