My Students

My students see the world racially as Black and White, with some Hispanics. In 11th grade English we study American Literature and the concept of the American Dream. Nowhere in our curriculum do we discuss Native Americans--I'd like to change that and I feel this book could help me.

The students I have this year are 11th graders who are functioning below grade level in reading and writing.

I have two 90 minute blocks of special ed/mainstream 11th grade English, each class with 37 students in it. About 14 per class are special education (various learning disabilities). They are curious and want to learn, but they need some low level texts with subjects that can interest them. We also need to stay inside the designated curriculum of American Lit to bolster their background knowledge for their U. S. History Regents exam. Our school is in "transformation" right now here in NY. We are on the State's lowest persistently achieving list. Our school is struggling to raise its graduation rate to get off this list. The students are great kids, but they struggle with discrimination, disabilities, poverty, death and a variety of other challenges that are all discussed in this book. They also struggle with literacy and this book has wonderful illustrations that will help.

My Project

We have been revising our curriculum for a couple of years to meet the needs of our students. Problem is, we can't buy all the books we need to in order to update our curriculum by grade, and with budget cuts this year...sigh. But this book is something I think my students would both enjoy and learn from. I want to include it in our second unit for this Fall--How the idea of the American Dream, when conceived, excluded people of color. In this unit we talk about the history of African Americans, but I thought a look at Native Americans would be a new, illuminating angle to take on the unit. This book is considered a Young Adult book but it does not look like one (important). It tells the story of a young man growing up on an Indian Reservation out West and a teacher who tells him to get off the "res" for any chance at survival. To do this, the protagonist must face rejection from his own community, discrimination at his new school, and a host of other issues. Great, great book.

A teacher I work with just received a grant for 20 of these books and has offered to share them with me.

If I receive 40 books, I can have enough to keep a class set and allow some of the more responsible students (with regular attendance) to take some home to read. I have received grants from DonorsChoose in the past and am very good at keeping track of my books. I can't explain how nice it is for the students to hold a brand new book in their hands that someone else bought for them.
