My Students

I teach at an engaged and diverse neighborhood school in the heart of the North End of Middletown, CT. Our school is truly a community school, with over 90% of our students walking to and from school each day. We are grateful to learn from the rich racial and cultural diversity of our students and their families. My fifth graders are creative, thoughtful, hard-working, and funny. They make me laugh every day.

Our school motto is "Knowledge is Power" and as the oldest students in the building, my students crave establishing that knowledge through their own curiosities; they are always asking questions.

We are a STEM-based school full of inquisitive minds who love to explore and learn more. Our school has two classrooms at each grade level K-5 as well as a pre-school, family resource center, and community health center within our building. Nearly 80% of our school is eligible for free and reduced-price lunch.

My Project

In our fifth grade classroom, we study the history of the United States, starting with the first nations of Native peoples. We learn about how Europeans colonized this land, the impact of that colonization and what happened when the Patriots wanted independence from England.

We connect what happened in the past to what is happening in our present and consider how we can use this knowledge to shape the future.

I am requesting high quality, high interest historical texts and historical fiction related to our content topics.

For some of these books, we already have a single copy in our classroom library. My goal with this project is to have enough copies to be able to read these texts in small groups and dig a little deeper than we might we be able to independently or as a whole group. I also included a whole class set for an excellent text on the American Revolution. I have read this book before with students and the author's comedic and engaging writing really helps students understand what caused this war. With each student being able to use their own copy as we read together, it will deepen their understanding and ability to connect with the text.
