Watershed Citizen Scientist

My students need iPads to document and research their citizen science project and learn in school. They get excited about learning about the environment and math and science!

My Students

Our 5th grade students, 85% are on free and reduced lunches. They are totally awesome learners, leaders, potential engineers, and will be citizen scientists for the Opihi Project, shoreline researchers! They are willing to learn about their world and share it through a national data base, with our university. They care about each other and our community. They are the persistence, dedicated, and have the drive to be an individual who dreams big and gives back to our community by striving for excellence.

They will use the equipment to study math and science all year long and the equipment will be used to add to our data on longitudinal research project with the University of Hawaii.

Students will identify and research a variety of shoreline fish, crustaceans and algae using the iPads. We can compare and explore the similarities and differences in the area and analysis the implications of the data they find. This will give them a chance to see what real life research scientist do, its a great opportunity in their young lives, that can change them to become big dreamers.

My Project

With the IPADS and mini IPADS students will be able to document the environment of the inter-tidal area, the creatures, algae, and corals. They will be able to collect data on how many things they see in each quadrant and transect line. Like real "scientist".

They will learn, at 5th grade how to do research, use many different tools in exploring a vital part of our environment and use their data to add to a larger Real Scientific Study in Hawaii, The OPIHI project at the University of Hawaii.

Learning with these document, and research tools will give our students a chance to identify each species by their scientific name along with a Hawaiian name.
