Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We love to make art! I teach in a 3rd grade, public school classroom bursting with creativity. My students come from a predominately low-income background and 40% of my students have learning disabilities. Many are also English Language Learners. I co-teach with a special educator and we work collaboratively to meet the needs of our diverse community of learners. I love what I do and strive to provide a rigorous and nurturing classroom. Our first week of school was full of community building activities and art making. In our exuberance, we used up all the watercolors and the watercolor paper that a friend had generously donated last school year. To keep our students expressing themselves, I am hoping for your help to provide them with a fresh stock of good paints and quality paper. Throughout the year, we will use watercolors to make watercolor paintings, watercolor resists and to add color and texture to pastel drawings. These techniques give students an opportunity to explore three distinct ways artists use this medium. Students will also have an opportunity to explore color mixing and to experiment with ranges of transparency. A key component of art making is language fomentation. Students have an opportunity to learn and use new vocabulary such as lighter, darker, thicker, thinner, texture, mixture, transparent, and opaque. Hands-on experiences, such as watercolor painting, are the best way for students to improve their vocabulary. You can help bring all this wonderful art-making to life in our classroom. We love to make art and will truly appreciate these materials. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
