My Students

“If you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for a moment.” - Georgia O'Keeffe The fluidity of watercolor paint and the calm created as we look at and paint flowers, prove time and time again to be a successful project for my young art students.

My school is the smallest middle school in the city, consisting of about 510 students, who come to us from various racial and economic backgrounds.

Our students are bursting with energy, and a thirst for movement and interesting assignments from teachers. Many of our students have challenges from poverty within their families, or disabilities intellectually, but the wonderful thing about coming to art class, is all of those groupings seem to disappear. I really love the mixture of personalities in my art classes. I love that it is a reflection of the real world, where people who are different, learn from each other in surprising ways.

My Project

Part of my art curriculum is art history, where artists' lives and techniques are explored. One such artist is Georgia O'Keeffe. Studying her life as a painter, feminist, risk-taker, advocate for the natural world, all, sets an impression for students. When we read about people who are fearless, and passionate about their work, it inspires us. Georgia O'Keeffe not only produced lovely paintings of flowers, but was also brave. Students will use the watercolor materials to create large paintings of various flowers, using some experimental techniques in watercolor painting. They will learn to closely observe flowers, the contour lines within them. They will learn the use of value of color as they paint, highlight, and shadow.

My school offers a limited budget for art supplies, and any supply requests from teachers throughout the school.

It is so hard to constantly hear that we just don't have the money. I want my curriculum to be interesting and fun for my students, and I spend a great deal of my own money funding my art projects. Watercolor materials such as pencils, paint, brushes, and especially paper can be a bit expensive. Students who have worked with watercolor in the past usually love the experience.
