My Project

Working in a 3K/PreK Center as the STEM teacher, I've witnessed first hand how beneficial water play is for child development. Not only does water play provide opportunities for deep learning of various science concepts, it also provides beneficial sensory play to help students regulate their emotional and tactile needs. My goal is to provide my students with a museum quality water play center within our 3K/PreK center that they can visit on a rotating basis to enrich their learning experiences beyond what is possible in their regular classrooms.

We currently engage in water play using large clear Sterilite bins and other creative trays which allow 1-3 students at a time.

However, the water tables and toys in this project would allow for more students to be able to have deeper and more intricate water play.

Additionally, the wading suits and floor tiles would provide protective measures to allow students to fully immerse themselves in play without worry of injury or terrible clothing disasters.

Finally, the wet/dry vacuum would allow me to quickly and easily clean up spills between classes and at the end of the day.

My students are special because they live in the poorest congressional district in the United States and yet they are resilient. Although they've added a children's museum to the Bronx, they've recently began to charge admission prices that many of our families cannot afford and have a difficult time traveling accessing. I would love to provide them this opportunity right in their school community where it is easily accessible and free. Everyday my students teach me new ways to play. They are the curriculum and they inspire the development of the work I do and experiences I provide.
