Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being an adolescent and leaving your family and country to make the journey to the US because your life has been threatened and you are fleeing violence. Making the dangerous journey alone, you experience violence and often sexual assault. Then you are detained as an unaccompanied minor and begin the legal process to obtain political asylum status. You didn't have much schooling after 6th grade because your family couldn't afford it or you had interrupted schooling throughout your life. Now, as immigrants, you must struggle to survive in a foreign language and school. This is the reality of the resilient newcomer students that I have been teaching since February 2015.

My students risked their lives for the "American Dream" and I want to provide them with all the opportunities possible to become their best self and achieve their dreams here.

These immigrant youth want to be successful students and be able to contribute to their families and communities. And while our country is polarized around immigration, I think we can agree that all young people deserve a safe community to grow up in and an education that allows them to develop their abilities and reach their potential.

My Project

I realized we finally needed a water cooler when it was 101 degrees today and we have no air conditioning. My windows barely open because of the protective cage on the outside, and with full sun in the morning, my classroom quickly becomes a sauna. I have fans that help circulate air, but today it was really tough for students to make it through the day without having water in our room. Although I let students leave for water, this is disruptive and distracting. I've tried having a pitcher that students refill, but they have to use a small bathroom sink to get the water. It is both unsanitary and inconvenient. We have limited water fountains in our building, and they are from the 1960s. They are deteriorating and uninviting, and I feel embarrassed telling my students to use them. All this leads to a strong need for a water cooler.

Staying hydrated is important for our health and having this water cooler in the room will allow students to drink more water and stay focused on our classwork.

This will also help my classroom continue to function without interruptions and students can have some of their basic needs met. Having constant water available is also comforting and calming to many students that have PTSD and often experience headaches.
