Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is in its 3rd year. We are a new dual language elementary school with about 230 students from pre-kindergarten through fourth grade. 99% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school population comprises of 68% Hispanic, 29% African American, 1% White, and 2% Asian students. Our classrooms have general ed students as well as students with special needs and English language learners. Many with special needs and many English learners. I currently have children who need a lot of one-on-one instruction. They have many different learning styles and what I have noticed is how excited they get when they read something new. Especially something that looks like something an adult reads.

My Project

We would like to have one water bottle filling station installed to replace a drinking fountain system that does not have the water bottle filing capabilities. We are trying to create a more hydrated student body by providing a water bottle filling stations. This station will reduce waste through the elimination of water bottle purchasing, and decrease the amount parents and schools will have to spend on clean, drinkable water.

Our current drinking fountains are unfiltered and shut off due to COVID-19.

We are left with two choices, stay thirsty or buy a disposable water bottle. These stations eliminate this dilemma.

This project is important to our schools because it reduces waste, cost of purchasing water bottles, it improves health and sanitation, and because a well hydrated brain functions better, this project will improve student learning.
