Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Each year my students and I learn about plants. We examine seeds, watch them sprout, transplant them and inevitably watch them die. Usually we send a few happy students home with their prized projects while the rest of us mourn our losses. Most of my 50 students have not experienced the joy of watching a plant grow and taking care of it. Our classroom environment limits our experience because our plants cannot get proper sunlight. My school allows me to spend $50.00 a year on supplies. As I was flipping through a science catalog to see what I would spend my money on, I saw what might be the answer to my problem: a plant stand with fluorescent lighting and a mini portable greenhouse. With these items, I feel that this project would impact the students so much more. This would broaden the goals of the assignment by extending into ecology, agriculture, and community. I am always looking for a better way to teach, but more than that, I look for better ways to develop my students into productive citizens. I think that by utilizing these tools, we could enlighten, as well as, educate the minds of my kids.
