My Students

Students at my exceptional high school come from all walks of life with a wide range of academic and creative abilities. My students are enrolled in a Foundations in Programming course which is an introduction to basic coding and computer science.

My hope is to encourage students to explore Computer Science at an early age in the hope that they will gravitate towards these much in demand, high paying jobs.

Students at my school are extremely motivated and we have some awesome Career Academies to help give students a taste of different careers. I'd like to see more students think of Computer Science as a future career!

My Project

My high school Computer Science students are often in front of their screens for a long 90 minute block period! We are heading into our next unit, an introduction to text-based programming and that is making some students anxious and others super-excited!

I'd like to give my students a short break in between our 90 minute block and provide them with some fun activities and stress management tools.

I'm requesting fidget toys for students that they can grab on their way into class, if they choose to. These have been proven to help students focus and release any stress they may encounter during the day. Our staff was recent trained in Capturing Kids Hearts, and similar items were highly recommended. Students will return the toys at the end of class, and I will sanitize them at the end of the day.

I'm also requesting some brain break materials like 2 minute paper folding and wiki stix activities for students to get their hands off their keyboards and eyes off their screens for a few minutes.

I have several students who have suffered tremendously due to the pandemic in various ways, and I feel that the mental well being and happiness of my students is a priority. I hope that including these small changes will help my students focus better on their academics and gain a sense of well being!
