Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Writing is a tremendous part of fourth grade. The students have created several published (final copy) pieces that include written content as well as illustrations. Using Sharpie markers to go over text as well as detail illustrations really makes the work come alive!

My school is comprised of Title 1 students, all hailing from immigrant backgrounds.

Many are 1st generation in this country, and all of them speak at least one other language. Their schooling is extremely important in their family, and the opportunity to become fluent and literate in English is paramount. Their is a strong emphasis on connecting cultures from native countries to our American culture in here in New York.

My Project

My students do a tremendous amount of writing in the fourth grade. When a piece has gone through the writing process from the brainstorming stage to the final, published piece, the children enjoy making their pieces look professional, just as in a book. Your gift will enable my students to go over their work in black ink so that the words really stand out on a page. Additionally, the use of permanent markers allows illustrations to really pop as they correspond with the writing.

My students deserve the opportunity to have their work stand out, demonstrating their growth as learners.

Despite our school being in a low socio-economic area, these children deserve the chance to have supplemental materials as though they were in a privatized, well-funded school.
