My school supports students from a wide variety of socio-economic environments, but the majority of them are from low-income homes. These families do not have much in their lives. Many have little money and very few have role models who have achieved academic or professional success. Without resources and guidance, kids often don't know how to define and achieve their dreams.
Schools offer an opportunity to learn academics PLUS the crucial transferrable life skills that are the tools to build a meaningful future.
Our school is adopting the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) model to prepare students for their future. AVID students learn skills in organization, studying, goal-setting, and overcoming challenges. Our culture nurtures a growth mindset, encourages future planning, and supports a college and career ready learning stance.
The kids in my classes are bright, caring, loving people who are straddling the line between children who follow and independent young adults who lead. Please help me give them the tools to discover their strengths and learn how to apply them to their future.
My Project
These materials will allow us to construct vacuum chambers to test Galileo's claim that all objects are accelerated by gravity at the same rate. Galileo hypothesized that air resistance causes different objects to fall at different rates.
By building these chambers, students can remove the air from a chamber, then drop a feather and a coin simultaneously and see them land at the exact same time!
This type of hands-on activity causes students to challenge their pre-conceived ideas of what happens and leads them running for an answer. By having students perform STEM activities up close and personal, it makes difficult concepts more tangible and real.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
