This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have grit! Character. Spirit. Perseverance. Passion.

Everyone has a story.

My students may only be nine, ten and eleven, but they already have a lifetime worth of stories to tell. It is my job to provide them with the tools to help them refine their storytelling.

I am one of the lucky people who enjoy going to work every day, so I am happy to be part of the 99%. My students are free spirits and are sponges waiting to soak everything up. They attend school in a densely populated part of the city.

My Project

I am requesting some pullover sweaters and lip balm (chapsticks) to support some of the students in my classroom who are in need of a little extra this Winter as well as provide some real-life lessons. I think that this Winter for us is one of the coldest and wettest one yet. With global warming continuing to play a detrimental effect to our climate, we need to make sure that our kids are ready. If their bodies are warm, their minds will be ready.

At this school, more than 50% of students fall into the Black, Latinx and come from low-income households.

Last week, our heater went out in class and the temperature indoor dropped to about 38 degrees. Since it was a classroom issue and not a building issue, we are low on the priority list to get fixed. No about of visualization exercise was going to get us focused.

With the donations of the sweaters and lip balm, it will not only take care of a basic need (cold students with chapped lips), but we will use the item to tie into a social students and economics and science lesson. What contributed to the manufacturing of the goods? What are some costs attributed to how said items are being priced and advertised? With Amazon selling so many items from so many vendors, what are some factors we might consider when buying and ordering on a tight budget?
