Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a middle school Social Studies Teacher at IS 61 in Corona, Queens, I include creative activities to reinforce lessons learned in my class. One strategy that I have found to be particularly effective is to have the students create posters that relate to the historical period being studied. In the past, we have created strike posters, "Wanted" posters for the robber barons and propaganda posters. In each poster, students are required to include specific material, but are also encouraged to be creative in illustrating what they have learned. My students love to demonstrate their knowledge by creating posters. It instills a sense of pride and achievement when they see their work prominently displayed in the halls and classrooms of IS 61. The materials supplied by the school are not sufficient to keep up with my students' appetite for creating posters. As a result, I am requesting posterboard for use by my students in the upcoming school year.
