Remember that one special book - the one that stole you away from the TV, that kept your bedroom light on all night, or the one that made you miss your subway stop? Sadly, many of my eighth graders have yet to find that book. In my English class, we follow our state's mandate that students read 25 books by the end of the school year. Our city asks that students be given thirty minutes a day to read independently. When eighth graders have the perfect book, these thirty minutes breeze by. Sadly, the thirty minutes can also be an exercise in torture for those students unable to form an attachment with any of the books in my library. In the past, my school has received classroom library books, but as funding shrinks each year, the amount of books we receive has dwindled down to zero. The books we do have are out of date, and they fail to engage my students, many of whom would be classified as reluctant readers.

My students' test scores dip toward the lower end of the spectrum. I know that the best way to improve my students' reading skills is to give them time to read. The only way to get them reading is to make exciting titles and engaging stories that I have previewed available to them. When I give my students a "teaser" introduction to a book, they are much more willing to try it. This has worked successfully in the past for them. My enthusiasm for an author's writing or a plot's suspense invades the room. I suddenly see hands raised high and voices shouting, "Can I read that one?" However, since this is my second year with the same group of students, we have exhausted my recommendations from the book room and my classroom library.

Therefore, we need new books to keep our reading momentum going. I've worked with the same students for the past year. I know their interests, their reading stamina, and their favorite authors. I've spent the summer reading over two dozen new titles that do not appear in our book room or classroom library. I would love to get copies of these popular and thought-provoking novels to place in my classroom library. Since they are all novels I have personally read, I will be able to pitch the novels to my students. As a result, I should have a happy group of readers, silently enjoying great works of fiction for their thirty minutes of independent reading each day. These additions to my library would not only benefit this year's eighth grade, but also my eighth grade classes to come.

Imagine a room full of raucous, hormonal adolescents filing into their English class. A few minutes later, each student is silent, eyes glued to his or her novel. A faint smile appears on one face. A concerned expression crosses the face of another. This silence, this concentration, and this enjoyment of the "reading zone" is only possible when students are able to connect with the right book. The more books we make available to students, the higher the chances that we will create a life-long reader. By contributing to this project, you will be putting a great book in the hands of a reluctant reader. As students meet with reading enjoyment and success, the text messaging stops, the TVs shut off, and my students' minds open up, one by one.
