Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach eighteen second graders in an underprivileged school in the South Bronx. My students have very few resources to stimulate academic growth and success. One of these limited resources is computer technology. There are two non-functioning Macs in my classroom. They have sat unused and dusty in the computer area of my classroom all year. My students have not been able to use them at all. They would be overjoyed if they could have three or four functioning computers and a printer in their classroom, but have decided to start small with just one computer and one printer. Unfortunately, many of my students do not have computers in their homes. It would be ideal to give them the opportunity to use computer technology in the classroom. I dream of my students working on projects with their peers, journaling, posting book reviews and book reports that they could share with others, participating in EPals with students from other schools, conducting research on search engines, and creating multimedia presentations with the information they have collected. This dream cannot be realized without a functioning computer and printer. Another benefit of having a computer in the classroom would be to support struggling students and students with special needs. The students that are functioning below grade level could benefit from drill and practice software and websites. Those students could listen to a CD-ROM storybook. This would help with unknown words and fluency. Students with special needs could use word processing, drawing, and painting applications in ways that are not able to with paper and pencil. All students would be able to create stories with illustrations that could be printed, published, and displayed throughout the school. They would be able to take advantage of word processing, painting, and drawing tools as well as sound and images. Computers are important tools for a twenty-first century education. Computer technology is just one more way for my students to learn, to explore their world and to express themselves. It is an asset to the materials that are already in the classroom. It would be an extension of what little resources are available to them. A computer and printer would bring my students that much closer to not being left behind. We would appreciate any help that we can get. Thank you.
