Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title 1 school and the parents try to help their child and the teacher the best they can. Most do not have extra money but willing to help out by donating what they can. Many of our students are new to school. Most have not had any pre-school or school experience. These students are learning how to behave in a classroom amongst (up to) 23 other students. Many are eager to please and show me what they are already able to do or show me what they have learned.

Our goal in Kindergarten is to be ready for First Grade.

The students are learning about classroom management and for some this can be a challenge since some have had no classroom experience. But the students enjoy listening to various literature. We currently have been reading books by Mo Willems and the students are excited to re-read these books. They are captured by the adventures of Pigeon, Piggie, and Gerard. These students understand how important it is to be engaged with the story. They learn about the story and the message the author is trying to share.

My Project

The big book stand will allow students to follow along as I use a pointer to point each word being read and students will also be able to see the bright and colorful illustrations. Reading along with the teacher will help students be engaged with reading/recognizing words. I hope it will be a hook for the students and they will want to read even more! The big books work better being read from a stand rather than having me balance the book, reading the story, and turning the pages. Unfortunately, I end up dropping the big book and learned I need a stand for it.
