Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being a 13 year old ELL/ESL student. Which one of the following definitions explains the word GENE more clearly? "A unit occupying a distinct position on a chromosome and having a crucial function..." or "a part of a cell that controls the development of a quality that is passed on..."

My students want to learn and improve themselves.

They are hard-working and inquisitive. They love science and what we do in our room and they find ways to connect it to their lives outside of our classroom. My students also struggle with the English language. We spend a lot of time working on vocabulary and meanings of words. Without this knowledge, they can not be successful in school or beyond.

My Project

If a student has a word he/she doesn't understand, they usually turn to a dictionary. In my classroom, that means using a dictionary that is filled with definitions that require even more definitions to understand. Sort of like: "A unit occupying a distinct position on a chromosome and having a crucial function..." My students would then need to look up the words distinct, crucial, & function in order to understand the first part of the definition. Frustration and confusion becomes the norm and they avoid using the dictionary, which means less learning. When we have these dictionaries, the kids will be able to look up the same word and have it defined in words that are easier for them to understand: "a part of a cell that controls the development..." This is so much better! By having these dictionaries, my students will be able to understand the meanings of words, learn more content, and be more successful in school.

When we get these dictionaries, I will see my students turn to a dictionary instead of away from it.

I will see them actively pursue knowledge when they realize it is within their reach instead of something that is even more difficult than the task at hand. I will see the light of understanding in their faces instead of the frustration of confusion.
