Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 46 amazing students who inspire me each day to become a better teacher. These same children are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. They are from a low-income/high poverty school district.

When they enter the classroom, they become dreamers, scholars, explorers and problem solvers.

They leave the harsh reality of their life at the door. These children are our future, and despite the many challenges they face, they enter the classroom full of smiles, dreams, and a strong desire to learn. We start our morning every day with singing and dancing to the song "Makin' It." If you entered our classroom at this time, you would see each of them singing their hearts out.

Although their challenges have prevented them from getting ahead early in life and may not have provided them with the life experiences many of us take for granted, you would never know it. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire them to continue following their dreams.

My Project

Reading should not be a chore or punishment for children. Parents and teachers often say things like, "Go to your room and read and don't come out until you are done," "No PSP until you complete your reading log," or“ You have an indoor lunch, so get a book to read." Showing my students how to learn to love reading is why I became a teacher, and creating the perfect atmosphere for budding readers is essential.

I relish in creating a space within my classroom where children can curl up with a good book, or friends can meet and discuss literature.

Establishing comfortable places to sit, or even lay down will help dismiss the notion that reading is a chore or punishment but instead promotes pleasure!

These chairs will give my students a relaxing place to read and learn that will propel them into a magical world full of print. The confines of a hard chair and desk fall short of creating this kind of ambiance. Research indicates that pleasure reading may have a greater influence on a child's overall academic performance than their socio-economic background. We need your help to create those spaces in every classroom.
