Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember the sense of awe you had every time you watched a Broadway show or a live rock concert? What if talented students could create their own sense of awe in their audience? Like Pitch Perfect, students hope to start with nothing but their voices, and create an incredible musical experience.

Imagine a regular Bronx high school, with students traveling from class to class with books and backpacks.

Now add to their gear a suitcase with a violin, or a wheeling cart with a trombone. My school contains a population of extremely talented and ethnically diverse musicians who treat their music as seriously as their academic subjects. Students come to school every day to perform and practice their voice or instrument for at least two periods in addition to their regular academic load. They yearn to find more and more avenues through which they can express themselves musically and still keep up with their academics. These students create a family and community of musicians, where they support and look out for each other.

My Project

Try and recall the sense of awe you have every time you are at a Broadway show or a live concert. Remember how professional everything sounds, and how you may not even realize that the singers are on microphones! With the popularity of a cappella music and shows like the Sing Off and movies like Pitch Perfect gaining popularity, the students wanted their own a cappella group. I held auditions for a brand new a cappella group, and by the end of the semester hope to create with the students a professional a-cappella group. Part of what they need to sound and feel professional is a sound system that complements their talents and abilities. With these wireless microphones, the students can take their first step to producing a professional-sounding performance for their family of musicians.

Students in my school dream of taking the stage and wowing their audience, seeing their very own standing ovation, and sending the audience home with a rare musical experience.

These microphones are the first step in fulfilling that dream. With these microphones, students in their brand new a cappella group can take the stage and perform just like a rock star or Broadway performer. They can experience something that will positively impact them for the rest of their lives.
