Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Good morning Ms. Marte! I miss you!", says my one little "Mon-Star". Twelve little faces, bright-eyed with big smiles greet me each morning at the stroke of 8. "Are we doing Writing today?" "Of course! And you can type your final draft!"... I may be able to reply with the chance of a new printer!

Ms. Marte's "Mon-Stars" is our family name!

We are "108-the-Great". My class consists of 12 Special Ed students with multiple disabilities. Our school is a TITLE 1 school and has a student enrollment in which more than half of the students come from low-income families. I teach a Self-contained Special Ed class with students that are also English Language Learners. My students' disabilities range from Autism, Emotionally Disturbed, ADHD, Learning Disabled, Speech and Language Impaired, and Other Health Impairment. Some students suffer from multiple disabilities which cause them anxiety, frustration, which then lead to melt-downs. Although they struggle greatly through out each and every day of their young lives, it is my job to make them feel that they can do anything they wish to do! I am here to motivate them and make them happy, know that they are cared for, listened to, and respected. My students have come to know that "It's OK to not KNOW, but It's not OK not to TRY".

My Project

The requested printer and ink in our classroom is a necessity. It has become one of our most important tools. Since my students struggle academically, I alleviate some of their stress by typing up and printing out their homework assignments daily. I also create worksheets, assessments and note-taking sheets right on our classroom computer. Each of my students has an Individualized Educational Plan (a legal document that all Special Ed students require) that I write annually on an online database, then printed and sent home. My students only visit the Computer Lab once a week for 50 minutes. They do not get enough time to practice typing and see their final product printed out in their hands. They are over-the-moon ecstatic when they can take home something that they have typed or created on the computer to show their families. With a working printer in our classroom, this can be achieved on a daily basis! Any little that can be done to raise their self-confidence goes a long way.

To our dismay, our classroom printer has had it's final "jam" session and has come to it's final resting place.

With all due respect to our printer, it did have a lengthy and busy life-span of approximately 8 years. But during times like these, when there is NO money in our school budget to replace printers or computers we have been backed into a corner. With your support you will make it possible for my students to be able to print again! Thank you for taking your time reading our story!
