I would like to purchase new portable audio players for my 7th and 8th grade special education students who LOVE to read books on tape and CD. I am an inclusion teacher at an elementary school in a large urban school district. I have 17 students on my caseload, but I work with any students who need extra support within the classroom. In fact, many English language learners and at-risk students also take advantage of my library of audio books. Using books on tape and CD has increased their independent reading time, promoted a love of reading, and caused their self-confidence and self-efficacy to blossom! While I have been working on adding to my library of books (see Help ALL Students Access Great Literature! proposal), I am always short on working Walkmans. About 30 students this year will benefit from these materials. Since they can be used throughout the years, many more will also benefit in the long run. I am asking for 8 new portable cassette players and 1 portable CD player which students will be able to check out for use with their books on tape and CD. It is important for me to be able to provide my students with access to the same great literature as their peers. Likewise, one of my most crucial roles as a teacher is to foster a lifelong love of learning and reading. Using audio books helps me to accomplish these goals, and without working Walkmans, this is not possible. Thanks!
