My students need an Easy Up Manual Treadmill to walk on in my classroom as part of our Nutrition and Wellness course and our high school's fitness initiative.

My Students
Every Friday is Fitness Friday in Nutrition and Wellness class. Students are expected to participate in various fitness activities throughout the entire class period. My goal is to teach students that fitness is not just for the athletes in their high school, but for everyone!
My students are typical American teenagers.
They eat too much unhealthy food, they do not exercise enough, they watch too much television, and they are in danger of becoming overweight. However, the teens in my courses tend to be at least interested in bettering their fitness levels and eating habits because they know when they enroll that "Nutrition and Wellness" is going to include these topics. We live in a relatively rural area and students do not have easy access to gyms and other exercise venues. Our school offers basic physical education courses, but not any sort of comprehensive fitness program. As a result, despite an active group of runners in the area, students are not exposed to the benefits of regular fitness programs for those who are not considered "athletes."
My Project
I am excited by the possibility of my students having access to a treadmill. Besides the obvious advantage of being able to use the equipment, they will also see how its use can be fit into their daily lives. I envision my students using the treadmill on Fitness Fridays, but also during any free time they might have during the course of the day. I would like to see students asking to walk on the treadmill during their lunch period or before or after school. They will learn the benefits of walking as exercise and see that an activity as simple as walking can have lasting health benefits. They will also realize that weather or limited daylight hours in the winter does not have to limit their ability to exercise.
Donations to this project will help improve students' health and fitness by giving them access to a new piece of exercise equipment.
Any project that improves health and fitness will always have a spillover effect--healthier students = more productive citizens!
