My Students

Children today, more than ever before are eating unhealthy and not getting the exercise they need. I will be taking my students on 30 minute walks through NYC once a week in order to explore new neighborhoods and get fit at the same time.

My students are 8th graders in a NYC public school.

As I was growing up, I had gym 5 days a week and my mom had me do at least 30 minutes of activity outside each day. Today, my students get gym and health just once a week. This is not the best way to create healthy habits. My students also do not understand the importance of balanced nutrition and the impact sugar has on their health, behavior, and academic career.

My Project

I am starting a walking club with my students to show them that they just need to start moving one step at a time. This will also give them the opportunity to explore areas of the city they might not have paid attention to previously. I hope that the use of the pedometers will show them exactly what they should be doing each day. The camcorder will be used to document the neighborhoods we visit, and create a memory of their journey.

Please help my students to appreciate the city they live in and to grow a respect for their health that they might not have already had.

Now is the last chance they might have to create a healthy lifestyle. Because they are still young it will be easier for them to turn any negative habits they have in regards to their health and nutrition into positive ones.
