Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I run a comic book club at my school in which students read and discuss all things comics. For them, it's a fun way to connect to others with similar interests; for me, it's an accessible way to improve literacy.

I have a group of students who have connected with comic book characters and stories that they love.

Bi-racial characters like Miles Morales, empowered females like Wonder Woman, and LGBT protagonists like Batwoman speak to the diversity of my school's population and interests.

My Project

My students are anxious to read the next installments of the series they love but cannot afford. Bring them the gift of empowerment and literacy. Comparative literature, text analysis, style analysis, etcetera are difficult concepts for students to master; however, when students are given texts they love, they are able to build their reading, writing, and analysis skills.

Any text you can put in a students' hands will help them not just in literacy, but in life.

Tapping into the Marvel Universe and DC Universe literally opens up new worlds. Comics are gateways to worlds in which disenfranchised groups have power and agency. They show students that the individual can make a difference, no matter what color or gender they are. They teach ethics and steer our moral compasses. They build empathy and compassion for others that are different.
