Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My goal is to boost literacy through high-interest reading materials such as comic books. They combine visual and literary elements to aid understanding for students with special needs and English language learners.

My school is in the Bronx in New York City.

It's a small school attempting to inspire student inquiry through discussion of high-interest materials. My students are English language learners and low reading level special education students. I teach both ninth and eleventh grade, and a common bond I have with my students is love of superheros.

My Project

My students need comic books to boost literacy. Students will use the visual elements of the comic books to boost understanding of the written words. They will gain experience and confidence as readers. Without realizing that they are building literacy they will be enjoying iconic stories grappling with very real issues. They will see themselves in Superman as immigrants, in Ms. Marvel as a fellow teenager, and in Batman as orphans. As they read they will learn what it means to be a hero.

Students who don't think of themselves as readers will fight for the chance to read these comics.

Students who already watch these characters in movies and TV will unlock a whole new medium to engage with their heroes. Ultimately, students will learn what it means to be a hero.
