My Students

I am a teacher in a special education self-contained support classroom. I have 12 students in grades 3-6. All twelve of my students have IEPs and extensive learning needs, most specifically in the areas of receptive and expressive communication. In addition to their learning disabilities, four of my students speak a language other than English in their homes. Their present levels of ability in both math and language arts range from approximately pre-k (identifying letter names and sounds, counting, addition within 10, etc) to beginning 3rd grade (reading longer texts, learning to structure paragraphs, multi digit addition/subtraction/multiplication, etc). The majority of my students also have deficits in their functional behavior. Because of their learning needs, core subjects are taught primarily in small learning groups.

My students are hardworking and eager to learn!

They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects that help them understand the world around them. Although they have many more challenges than their typical peers, they come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. Truly, they are my inspiration!

My Project

COVID-19 has been difficult for everyone, but virtual learning was especially challenging for students with disabilities. For many children in my classroom, online learning was impossible without constant one-on-one support. Most of them are not able to log on to a computer independently or maintain the focus required to participate in online lessons. Because of this, deficits that were already present before the virus increased over the several months that they were unable to attend school in-person. These resources will help my students improve their academic skills and functional behavior as they readjust to in-person learning.
