About My Students

My students have multiple different disabilities, but have the same interests as their general education peers. Our school has a Student Enrichment Model, or SEM for short, the teacher's passion dictates the material, and the students who are interested sign up for it. Students who participate range in grades from 5-8 and can be in any special needs class population.

This year, I will be combining imagination and engineering, and would love to teach the students how to build a computer, but this computer wouldn't be any ordinary computer. The students have shown a particular interest in VR or virtual reality after a student told a story of an experience that they had.

Students will learn the various parts of a computer, and how they work together. Students will take apart a computer in order to rebuild it. Students will have access to VR which will allow them to visit places on virtual class trips, and explore places as far as outer space.

In Their Own Words

We use computers and want to know how they work.

We can learn in new ways.

We can fix a computer.

We can build a VR location.

The VR is fun and educational.

We can go to new places that we can't go to right now like Kentucky and China.

We were able to pick the computer that we wanted for the project.

We picked the HTC Vive instead of other VR headsets.

We can share with the other students what we learned about computers and how they work.

We can share with the principal how we made a project to get materials for our group!

We look for new ways to be prepared for when we are adults. Learning how to build a computer will give us skills for future careers. We have friends in other classes who are in wheelchairs and do not have the same opportunities that we have to go on trips. The VR headset will give them some opportunities to do the things we do.
