My Students

We are a pre-k through 5th grade elementary school. We serve a very diverse population of students in preschool through fifth grade. Our goal is always to prepare our students for success in high school, college, and the everyday world. Since our school is near the University of Michigan, we get a lot of students from China, Japan, and Korea. Many of our students are English language learners that greatly benefit from library storytime.

My students are so excited about books and stories, particularly when they feel they can somehow relate to the story.

Books are an amazing way to introduce characters of different races, cultures, backgrounds, and economic statuses. Introducing children to a world of people through books and storytime is an extremely powerful and positive tool that can help support how children view our world and each other. The nominees for the Great Lakes Great Books Awards are stories my students can get excited about and relate to.

My Project

This project, Voting for Books! The Great Lakes Great Books Award, will provide students with the confidence to voice their opinion in the library and take part in a voting process. Students will participate in the Great Lakes Great Books Award during the 2021-2022 school year. This award is sponsored by the Michigan Reading Association.

The Great Lakes Great Books Award program gives students the chance to vote for their favorite children's book of the year.

During the months of October, November, and December, students will listen to a book nominated for the award every week during their scheduled library time. The books provided by this project will be read aloud to students. Once all books have been read during library class, students will vote for their favorite. All votes will be submitted to the Michigan Reading Association. We are excited and proud to help select the Great Lakes Great Books Award winners for the 2021-2022 school year.
