This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The use of graphing calculators has become essential in a calculus class. About 7 years ago, our school was able to buy a class set of calculators. Even though I have tried my best to make them last as long as possible, after hundreds of students using them, some need to be replaced.

My students come from working families that have trouble satisfying their basic needs.

Most of them are recent immigrants who do not yet understand the importance of technology in school and would not be willing or able to afford a $100 calculator. These students are as bright as they come but have many challenges to face due to their family's inability to support their educational needs.

My Project

I plan to use these 7 requested calculators to teach my students how to find the integral of a function that cannot be solve by simple integration techniques. We have completed a project in which they created a three dimensional object of known cross sections. The students approximated the volume by using a Riemann sum. Using the graphing calculator, they will be able to find an equation of the function that best fits the base of the solid and then calculate the exact volume by integration.

Using technology in the classroom will motivate students to further study mathematics.

It will also help them understand better the concepts that they learn using paper and pencil. Students will be able to see mathematics in action.
