This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This is the second year that our school has a volleyball team. Last year, we had nine players on our 7th/8th grade team, and we survived practice with only six balls during the whole season. Almost all of our players are new to the sport, but we have heard that a few of them have gone on to play volleyball in high school after graduation. Starting this second year, we have more forty students who tried out for the team, and currently about 24 players remain for both the 5th/6th team and 7th/8th team.
Our players work hard during practice and in the games.
They are positive and encouraging towards their teammates even though we only have a small gym to practice. Many students are new to the sport, but they have been making progress due to their hard work and dedication. If anything, we are a team that cares for each other and grow together.
My Project
We need the most basic equipment - volleyballs! Having enough volleyballs for practice will give each student enough touches on the balls to develop their basic skills - bumping, setting, and hitting. The ball cart will save a lot of time during practice and transitions. We also asked for two setter weighted balls for advanced skills as our school team grows over the years.
Volleyball is a very fun sport that can build focus and perseverance.
If anything, volleyball requires concentration, agility, and structure. When defending, every player has a specific zone in which they guard. When attacking, the setter is the brain of the team, and she sets up the play for the team to score. Players have to focus on their responsibilities (concentration), be quick to think and move (agility), and know their teammates well enough to be in sync with each other (structure). It is a great sport to build team spirit.
