Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a small school of just about three hundred students in grades 9-12. We are located in the South Bronx, although our students do come from neighboring communities within the Bronx.

More than 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

We also have several dozen students that are homeless or doubled up. Regardless, many of these students are parts of sports teams. Many of the girls on the volleyball team struggle with practice because the net is broken. It is old and falling apart. Unfortunately, it is being held together by tape and falls down often during practice. The girls love being a part of a team but it is a struggle to ensure practices run smoothly. Our volleyball team has a lot of potential, work really hard together and support each other immensely. GO PYTHONS!

My Project

Having a new net is a great investment for our team. As one of our volleyball teammates, Loreily, said: "It is so difficult to play volleyball when we practice. Our net is falling apart. We have to fix it a lot while playing and it takes time away from practice. We also practice at the nearby park, which is right by the Hudson River. We have lost a few balls this year when they bounced far away and ended up in the river.

Our team loves volleyball and spends so much time practicing.

We work hard together but want to improve. We will improve by having a better net to practice with, and more volleyballs to go around."
