Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When ordinary people decide to do extraordinary things they transform their lives and the lives of others around them. -Oprah Winfrey

I have a culturally and economically diverse group of students, but the commonalities they all share and what I am most proud of are their great hearts and passion for learning.

They treat each other with respect and are sensitive to each others' differences. They maintain an "I can" attitude and understand that they are the keepers of their own success. They have a true desire to learn and are highly motivated to work toward their own personal best. I teach at a Title 1 school that serves a diverse population of children with varying needs. Despite challenges, our students continue to thrive both socially and academically, with the support of dedicated teachers, a hard-working principal, an equally hard-working office staff, amazing parents, and a wonderful community! I'm lucky to be part of such a great school!

My Project

The resources I am requesting will be used in the following ways: I have ordered a class set of Reach: 40 Black Men Speak on Living, Leading, and Succeeding. Each student will have their own copy in which we analyze the individuals whose stories are presented and compare and contrast the different accounts shared by each man. In addition, supporting literature will be introduced to highlight other successful African-American male and females throughout our history and current times. Students will then select an important African-American figure that they are interested in learning more about and conduct research. Students will utilize the art materials to present their findings in the form of a collage that will include quotes and images of their person of study to be displayed in a student created art exhibit. Other classrooms will be invited to attend for a gallery walk-through of student work.

This project will benefit my students in many ways.

It is so important to highlight the achievements and successes of men of color. Too often minorities are portrayed in a negative light; these books will allow students to understand the universal human struggle and how anyone can rise above difficult situations despite the obstacles they may face. I want my students to be inspired by the stories of the men featured in Reach, to persevere and reach great heights.
