My Project

I am seeking to acquire a selection of books that feature characters who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems. These books will serve as powerful tools for our students who are learning to communicate in diverse ways. By seeing themselves represented in literature, they will not only feel understood but also inspired to explore their own voices.

The books I am requesting will provide relatable narratives for our students, helping them to visualize their own experiences and understand that communication can take many forms.

These stories will enhance communication skills in our AAC users by showing them that other kids communicate just like them; foster empathy and understanding in my students' general education peers; and promote literacy development in my AAC project.

My goal with this request is to provide students with stories that reflect their own experiences and the experiences of others who communicate in similar ways. It will foster a culture of inclusion where all students feel valued and are eager to participate in discussions about the stories. It will also equip students with the tools they need to express themselves confidently and effectively, both in the classroom and beyond.

My students are resilient and full of potential. Each one has a unique way of communicating, and they demonstrate remarkable creativity and determination in overcoming challenges. They inspire each other every day, showing that effective communication is about connection, not just words. By integrating books that mirror their lives, we can further empower them to share their stories and build their confidence. This project will not only enhance their learning experience but also celebrate their individuality and strength.
