This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year I am a fourth-year high school special education teacher. I will be teaching juniors in Algebra 2, seniors in seminar, and freshmen through senior-level math resource support. My students are all unique individuals with many gifts and talents. My school is over 95% of students who qualify for free or reduced-rate lunch. I work in Chicago Public Schools where most of my students have been remote learning since March of 2020. I am looking to totally revamp my classroom to make it feel as exciting as possible after being remote for the last 18 months. I want my classroom to be as inclusive as possible to all those that step foot through my door.

I want to make the school year 2021, post-pandemic, the best one yet!

Please help me to create a culture in the classroom that reengages kids in learning, is inviting, and keeps them coming back for more.

My Project

This project is to help students be heard in the classroom. The Qball is a microphone built into a ball that is meant to be tossed around the classroom. This is a important because everyone has a voice that is worth being heard. With masks still required in the classroom it has become increasingly difficult to hear students/peers over air purifiers and through masks. This will be used specifically during the summarize portion of math lessons. Students start with an exploratory math lesson where they work with group members to explore a new math topic. At the end of exploring this they come back together whole group to share out their findings, synthesize commonalities and create one larger picture of the topic.

Here is where students sharing whole group will have opportunity to pass around the Qball to amplify their voice so the whole class can hear.
