Voices for Non-Verbal Children

My students need a color printer with ink to enhance learning and provide visual images to improve instruction. The color ink will help capture students during instructional times, and provide a voice for non-verbal children.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are special needs children ages 5-7 primarily diagnosed as having autism. These children have difficulty with speech, cognition, communication, sensory processing, fine and gross motor skills, retention of information, transitioning from one activity to another, restrictive dietary needs, social deficits, and emotional instability. Many of my students may engage in aggressive behaviors due to the nature of their disability and difficulty understanding the world in which they live. These children require special adapted supplies, picture symbols, and additional resources and materials to maximize their learning potential. These students attend an inner city public school in which they all receive free breakfast and lunch due to the fact that they live in an area described as extreme poverty. Many of these students do not have the proper resources at home, or supplies at school to help meet their individual, personal, and educational needs. Many of the families require time and training to assist in the development of their children but do not have the personal finances to provide supplies to benefit their children. Not only do these children suffer from difficulty dealing with the world around them, but they also lack the financial resources to attain the proper materials.

My Project

Imagine understanding what is going on in your environment, but not being able to communicate back. Have you tried to be silent for one day?

Some children with Autism may not be able to verbally communicate or to speak so we need to be creative and provide other ways for them to engage with the surrounding world.

Students who can not communicate verbally use picture symbols to help them request wants and needs, label items, identify, and to write sentences. We help encourage learning by using specific systems by color coding different words. For example, who=yellow, what=orange, where=purple. By color coding different types of words students with special needs learn about sentence structure, learn how to answer specific questions about stories that are being read, and students learn how to engage in conversations.

Let's face it, learning in color is more appealing than learning in black and white. Children like color, they gravitate toward it. This is why children's hospitals are vibrant with color, one of the best gifts your can give a child is paint, or crayons so they can explore through color. How many of us get excited when we see a rainbow because color makes us happy, it engages us, and makes us aware of everything around us. It is important to engage students in learning that is naturally appealing and this is how we will do it. You can help make children excited about reading, help give them the will to participate in education that is meaningful and delightful. Children with special needs have a difficult time as is being motivated to learn, and we need your help to maximize their potential.

Please consider donating to this project and helping enrich the educational experience for students with special needs who really need your support.
