My Students

Many of my students are bright, creative young adults whose various disabilities often prevent them from sharing all that they have to offer.

My exciting job is to find ways to make it possible for them to reach their maximum potential in both academic and community settings.

The students that I work with vary in age from 14-21 years of age and are diagnosed with autism and other developmental and learning delays. Our students are also being taught how to become a vital part of their local community while still engaging in academics. Often their days include going to vocational sites and being integrated within the community to prepare them for adulthood.They are in a special education program geared toward exposing them to a variety of skill sets with the hope that they begin to develop life passions.

My Project

My occupational therapy (OT) department focuses on promoting independence to all our high school students with special needs. We work on vocational readiness skills along with executive funtioning skills (the ability to attend, plan, organize, and complete tasks). In OT, we created a greeting card business called Hungerford Cards in which the students have complete autonomy in designing, assembling, marketing, and selling the cards with my guidance. Many skills are addressed while creating something they enjoy. Money is managed and budgeted with the students in terms of reinvesting for supplies and rewarding ourselves with a pizza/ice cream party. We want to expand on our business and begin creating iron-on shirts to sell along with maintaining our growing card business. These projects will hone in on their vocational skills while creating and completing beautiful artwork.
